Indian Stock Market Outlook: PMI Data, US Trade Talks & FOMC Minutes to Dictate Next Week's Direction

Detailed Coverage:

The Indian equity market is poised for movement influenced by several key factors in the week ahead. Domestic Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data, ongoing negotiations for the India-US trade deal, and the minutes from the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting are anticipated to guide market direction. Foreign investor activity will also play a role in shaping trading trends.

Analysts suggest a cautious yet strategic approach. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Ltd, advises investors to focus on sectors with strong fundamentals, clear earnings visibility, and structural tailwinds, suggesting portfolio positioning for potential upgrades in the second half of fiscal year 2026 (H2FY26).

Last week, the benchmark Sensex saw a surge of 1,346.5 points (1.62%), while the Nifty advanced by 417.75 points (1.64%). This positive momentum was attributed to the resolution of the US government shutdown, bolstered by strong domestic fundamentals, stronger-than-expected Q2 earnings reports, and a notable easing of inflation.

Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, highlighted the activity in capital-market-linked stocks, supported by strong retail participation, elevated SIP flows, and enthusiasm for recent and upcoming IPOs. He anticipates Indian equities will maintain their upward trend, supported by firm domestic macroeconomic indicators, healthy earnings, and the political stability reinforced by the ruling NDA's electoral mandate in Bihar.

With the earnings season now concluding, market attention is expected to shift towards broader domestic themes. These include early signs of demand pickup from the festive and wedding seasons, the evolving interest rate trajectory, and prospects for higher capital expenditure through H2FY26. The reopening of the US government and an improving global risk appetite further add to the supportive backdrop.

Sectorally, information technology, metals, and capital market-linked stocks may remain in focus, benefiting from improved earnings visibility, favorable policy signals, and steady domestic liquidity.

Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research at Religare Broking Ltd, noted that investor confidence significantly improved as India's retail inflation cooled sharply to 0.25% in October from 1.44% in September, aided by GST rate cuts and easing food prices. As the earnings season winds down, the focus will shift to high-frequency domestic indicators such as Services PMI, foreign exchange reserves, and infrastructure output data.

Globally, market sentiment will be shaped by key US economic releases, including the FOMC meeting minutes. Additionally, volatility in AI-linked stocks will remain a significant factor to monitor for its potential influence on broader market sentiment.
