Indian Rupee Rises 24 Paise to 95.46 Against US Dollar

The Indian rupee strengthened to 95.46 against the US dollar on Tuesday, supported by a rally in domestic stocks and a decline in global crude oil prices. The currency's performance was also bolstered by positive sentiment regarding US interest rates and the Reserve Bank of India's foreign exchange liquidity support.

The Indian rupee appreciated by 24 paise on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to settle at 95.46 against the US dollar. This move comes as investors cheered a strong performance in domestic equity markets, where the BSE Sensex climbed 286.98 points to close at 77,656.09, and the Nifty 50 advanced 115.50 points to 24,334.55.

Impact of Oil Prices and Global Factors

A primary factor behind the currency's recovery was the decline in international crude oil prices. Brent crude futures fell by 2.99% to $89.41 per barrel. Because India imports a large portion of its energy requirements, a drop in oil prices reduces the amount of dollars needed for these payments, which in turn helps support the rupee. Additionally, the dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of currencies, traded with a slight downward bias at 98.96. This minor weakening of the dollar provided relief to emerging market currencies, including the rupee.

RBI Liquidity and Market Support

The Reserve Bank of India’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the currency remain a central theme for the financial system. The central bank's special USD-INR forex swap facility, designed to encourage foreign exchange inflows, has successfully mobilized $73 billion as of August 21, 2026. This consistent influx of foreign exchange provides a vital cushion against sudden market volatility. Furthermore, the sentiment in the equity markets remained positive, with foreign institutional investors recorded as net buyers, having purchased shares worth ₹1,181.66 crore in the previous trading session.

While the rupee found some breathing room during Tuesday's session, the near-term outlook remains sensitive to global energy costs and interest rate signals from the US Federal Reserve. Market participants are likely to monitor crude oil price movements and the Reserve Bank's continued intervention as the primary indicators for currency stability in the coming sessions.
