Indian Rupee Opens At 95.95 Against USD, RBI Strategy In Focus

The Indian rupee opened at 95.95 against the US dollar on September 30, a slight recovery from the previous close of 95.98. Investors are tracking potential Reserve Bank of India intervention as the currency faces pressure from a strong dollar index and higher crude oil prices.

The Indian rupee started Wednesday, September 30, at 95.95 against the US dollar, showing a small recovery from the previous day’s close of 95.98. Investors are currently tracking how the Reserve Bank of India manages currency volatility, especially as the month ends. Historically, the central bank has intervened near this level to support the rupee during times of pressure.

The currency faces challenges from a stronger US dollar index, which is hovering around 101.39. Additionally, Brent crude oil prices near $96.56 per barrel create extra demand for dollars, which can weigh on the local currency. US 10-year Treasury yields at 5.2340% further support the dollar, making it a difficult environment for emerging market currencies.

Across Asia, the performance is mixed. While the Japanese yen showed some strength with a 0.16% rise, other currencies like the South Korean won faced selling pressure, declining 0.43%. The Indonesian rupiah and Philippine peso also saw minor retreats. This fragmented performance shows that investors are reacting differently to the current strength of the US dollar.

Globally, the US dollar is showing significant strength, nearing its best monthly performance in over a year. This is largely driven by resilient US economic data and expectations that interest rates may remain elevated. In contrast, the euro has touched levels not seen since May 2025, pressured by energy supply concerns and debt issues in European markets.

For investors and companies involved in foreign trade, the key monitorable will be any volatility at month-end and how the Reserve Bank of India responds. Whether the rupee maintains its current level will depend on both the central bank's actions and broader shifts in global dollar demand.
