Indian Rupee Flat at 95.15 Despite Lower Oil Prices

The Indian rupee closed nearly unchanged on Monday after losing early gains driven by lower crude oil prices. Persistent dollar buying from importers and state-run banks neutralized the positive momentum. Investors are now shifting focus toward the Reserve Bank of India’s upcoming policy decision this Wednesday.

The Indian rupee ended Monday’s trading session with minimal movement, struggling to hold onto early gains that had briefly pushed it to a three-week high of 95.1275 against the U.S. dollar. While a significant drop in international crude oil prices typically supports the rupee, the currency faced stiff resistance near the 95.15 level due to heavy dollar demand from importers and public sector banks.

Impact of Crude Oil and Global Sentiment

Crude oil prices, a major factor for the Indian economy as the country imports a large portion of its energy needs, saw a sharp decline earlier in the day. This shift followed reports that diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East might lead to a new deal. Although this global development initially lifted sentiment across Asian currencies and boosted local equity markets, the rupee’s momentum proved short-lived. Traders observed that state-run banks were active in the market, likely purchasing dollars to satisfy demand from domestic companies.

Intervention and Global Context

While the rupee remained range-bound, global currency markets showed more volatility. The Japanese yen reached a three-month high, supported by a joint intervention from U.S. and Japanese authorities. Official data indicates that approximately $36.58 billion was utilized in this effort to stabilize the yen. In comparison, the dollar index, which measures the strength of the U.S. currency against a basket of others, remained relatively steady at 99.7, signaling that the dollar continues to hold strength despite localized interventions.

RBI Policy Meeting in Focus

Market attention is now moving toward the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) monetary policy committee meeting, with the final decision expected on Wednesday. Most economists expect the central bank to keep policy rates unchanged as it continues to balance inflation concerns with economic growth goals. For businesses dealing in foreign exchange, advisory firms suggest a cautious approach. Exporters are generally encouraged to hedge exposure based on confirmed orders, while importers may evaluate locking in current rates to manage the uncertainty surrounding potential currency fluctuations.

Investors will likely track the RBI’s commentary on currency volatility and inflation, as these factors often influence how the rupee behaves in the weeks following a policy announcement.
