Indian Markets Snap 7-Day Losing Streak, Sensex Rises 628 Points

Indian equity markets recovered on August 20, 2026, ending a seven-session decline. The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 surged as IT and financial stocks led the gains, supported by easing global bond yield concerns.

Indian stock markets saw a significant rebound on Thursday, August 20, 2026, ending a seven-session streak of losses that had unsettled investors. The BSE Sensex gained 628.04 points, or 0.82%, to close at 77,537.72. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 climbed 153.55 points, or 0.64%, to finish the day at 24,231.85.

The recovery was primarily driven by improving sentiment regarding global borrowing costs. A key factor was the US Treasury’s decision to increase long-term bond buybacks, which helped cool down bond yields. When bond yields fall, it often reduces pressure on global equity markets, as borrowing becomes relatively cheaper and less risky. This shift in sentiment helped domestic investors look past recent worries and return to buying across various sectors.

Sectoral leadership was clear, with Information Technology (IT) and financial stocks acting as the main engines of the rally. These sectors had faced pressure in previous sessions but saw a strong return of buying interest on Thursday. The strength was widespread, with 13 out of 16 major market sectors ending the day in positive territory. Among specific companies, Eternal Ltd stood out, recording gains of over 2% during the trading session.

Despite the positive day, market conditions remain sensitive to several underlying risks. Investors are continuing to monitor elevated global crude oil prices, which are currently hovering near $92 per barrel. This is a critical factor for the Indian economy as higher oil prices can increase import costs and impact trade deficits. Additionally, persistent geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, remain a concern that could trigger sudden market volatility.

Looking ahead, the market's stability will likely depend on whether these global conditions stay calm. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also signaled vigilance regarding inflation, which keeps the possibility of future interest rate adjustments on the table. For investors, the next important monitorable will be how these global economic factors and domestic policy cues evolve in the coming weeks.
