Indian Markets Slip as RBI Decision and Oil Prices Weigh

Indian stock benchmarks ended lower on August 4, 2026, snapping a four-day winning streak. The BSE Sensex fell 210 points to 78,428.95, while the Nifty 50 dropped 159 points to 24,614.90. Investors reduced risk ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s policy announcement on August 5, while rising crude oil prices and a new stock closing rule added to the pressure.

Indian stock markets paused their four-day winning streak on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, as investors adopted a cautious approach. Both the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty 50 finished the day in the red, reflecting nervousness ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) upcoming policy update. The BSE Sensex closed at 78,428.95, a decline of 210.08 points, while the Nifty 50 settled at 24,614.90, down 159.40 points.

The most significant factor impacting the market mood was the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting. The committee has been meeting since August 3, and the official decision is scheduled to be announced on August 5. Many investors expect the central bank to keep the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 5.25%. The market is focused on whether the RBI will provide hints about future interest rate changes or offer a commentary on the inflation outlook, which could impact borrowing costs for businesses and home loan rates for individuals.

Adding to the pressure was a rise in global crude oil prices, with Brent crude moving closer to $85 per barrel. Since India imports a large portion of its oil requirements, higher energy prices often lead to concerns about rising inflation and pressure on the value of the Indian Rupee. These macro-economic worries made investors hesitant to make large bets, leading to profit-taking after the recent market gains.

Technical adjustments in the market also contributed to the day's price swings. Traders and institutions are currently adjusting to the newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS) mechanism for stocks in the futures and options (F&O) segment. This new process changes how the final price of a stock is determined at the end of the trading day. Uncertainty about how this new system works during high-volume periods has caused some hesitation among traders, adding to the day’s volatility.

Sector performance showed a clear divide. Stocks in the banking and financial services sectors, along with IT companies, faced selling pressure throughout the session. In contrast, the metal and media sectors showed some resilience, managing to hold onto gains despite the overall weakness in the broader market.

For investors, the primary update to track is the official RBI announcement on Wednesday. Beyond the interest rate decision, the central bank’s commentary on economic growth, global risks, and the inflation path will determine how the market reacts in the coming days. Additionally, monitoring the stability of the new closing auction process will be important as market participants become more familiar with the system over the next few sessions.
