Indian Markets Set for Muted Start on August 14 Amid Mixed Cues

Indian indices are likely to see a flat opening today, with GIFT Nifty hovering near 24,440. While global markets reached record highs, investors remain cautious due to geopolitical tensions and persistent foreign institutional selling.

Indian equity markets are expected to open on a quiet note today, August 14, as investors digest a mix of strong international performances and local caution. GIFT Nifty, which provides an early indicator of market sentiment, was trading around 24,440, suggesting a flat to negative beginning. This follows a split session on August 13, where the BSE Sensex managed to close slightly higher at 78,079.96, while the Nifty 50 slipped to 24,395.85.

Global markets have been largely supportive, with major US indices such as the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq touching record highs following encouraging inflation data. This rally has helped lift sentiment across Asian markets as well. However, the domestic market is balancing these positive cues against specific local pressures, including elevated crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, which continue to create a sense of unease among traders.

A key theme for investors remains the divergence between foreign and domestic institutional money. On August 13, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued their selling streak, offloading equities worth ₹510.69 crore. Conversely, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have been actively supporting the market, buying shares worth ₹4,353.09 crore. This consistent support from DIIs has been crucial in providing a floor to the indices during recent volatile sessions.

Looking ahead, the market direction will depend on how institutional flows evolve and how global events influence commodity prices, particularly crude oil. Investors will also keep a close watch on ongoing quarterly earnings results, as individual company performance continues to drive stock-specific movements. The lack of a clear, strong directional trigger means that the market may experience continued intraday volatility as it looks for stability.
