Indian Markets Rise for Second Day; RBI Policy Decision Awaited

Indian equity benchmarks Nifty 50 and Sensex gained nearly 1% on Tuesday as market sentiment improved ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s policy outcome on October 7. While indices recovered, investors remain cautious due to ongoing currency pressure and high inflation concerns. The upcoming central bank decision on interest rates will be the key factor influencing market direction.

Indian equity benchmarks maintained their momentum on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, marking a second consecutive day of gains. The Nifty 50 rose 0.98% to close at 22,776.10, while the Sensex added 685 points to end the session at 73,067.81. This recovery reflects a cautious optimism as market participants position their portfolios ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) critical Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) outcome on Wednesday.

The central bank's stance is the primary focus for the market. Analysts widely anticipate a 25-basis-point increase in the repo rate, which would lift the benchmark rate to 5.50%. This expectation is driven by persistent inflation concerns, with retail inflation reported at 4.82% in August, staying above the RBI’s 4% comfort target. For investors, the concern is whether the central bank will signal further hikes or maintain a pause after this potential move.

Despite the session's gains, the broader macroeconomic environment remains challenging. The Indian rupee continues to face pressure, closing at 96.42 against the U.S. dollar, hovering near multi-month lows. This currency weakness, combined with sustained foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows and elevated global bond yields, adds a layer of caution to the market rally. A weaker rupee often increases import costs, which can further fuel inflationary pressures, potentially forcing the central bank to maintain a tighter monetary stance for longer.

The market reaction on Tuesday showed notable sectoral divergence. Financial services, led by private sector banks, provided the primary support for the headline indices, while the IT sector faced selling pressure. Investors are now evaluating how a potential rate hike might affect interest-rate-sensitive sectors. Generally, higher borrowing costs can pressure margins for companies in the real estate, auto, and consumer durable industries, as higher interest rates often cool down consumer demand and increase debt servicing costs for businesses.

As the MPC meeting concludes on October 7, the focus for investors will shift from the headline rate change to the RBI’s forward-looking commentary. Any guidance regarding future interest rate trajectories, liquidity management, and the central bank's view on economic growth will be crucial. Additionally, with global crude oil prices remaining a variable, the RBI's assessment of imported inflation and external economic stability will be a key monitorable for market sentiment in the coming weeks.
