Indian Markets Poised for Weak Start Aug 25 on Global Cues

Indian benchmark indices are set for a negative opening on August 25, 2026, as weak global sentiment and a technology-led sell-off in US markets weigh on sentiment. Investors remain cautious ahead of major US earnings reports and potential geopolitical tensions involving Iran.

Indian benchmark indices, the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex, are expected to open in the red on August 25, 2026. Early trading indicators, including the GIFT Nifty, suggest a gap-down opening of approximately 45 to 70 points. This anticipated decline follows a session on August 24 where the Nifty 50 fell 0.14% to 24,219.05 and the Sensex dropped 0.22% to 77,369.11.

The primary driver for this caution is the negative performance of US equity markets, particularly in the technology sector. A sell-off in major semiconductor stocks, with Nvidia seeing a decline ahead of its upcoming earnings report, has dampened risk appetite globally. When leading US tech shares fall, it often creates a ripple effect, reducing confidence in growth-focused equity markets.

Apart from technology sector volatility, investors are assessing the potential impact of economic sanctions on Iran. Geopolitical concerns often influence global oil prices and bond yields, which can indirectly pressure emerging markets like India. Additionally, the India VIX, which tracks market volatility, rose by 2.90% in the previous session, indicating that traders expect more price swings in the near term.

Domestic market dynamics show a tug-of-war between foreign and local investors. While domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have been providing consistent support, persistent selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) has kept index gains in check. The market is currently range-bound, and this lack of clear direction often leads to profit-booking when global cues turn negative.

The key focus for investors in the coming days will be the actual earnings data from major global tech companies and the stability of the local market as it navigates these external pressures. Market participants will likely track whether domestic institutional buying can offset any heavy FII selling during the session, and if the Nifty can hold its support levels despite the rise in market volatility.
