India-US Strategic Ties Deepen, But Trade Hurdles Remain

India and the US are strengthening cooperation in defense, IT, and healthcare. However, investors face uncertainty as trade negotiations hit a standstill due to concerns over energy imports and potential tariffs under new US sanction laws.

The strategic partnership between India and the United States is seeing significant momentum, with both nations emphasizing deeper integration in defense, information technology, and healthcare. Following recent high-level dialogues, including a discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, the two countries are expanding their collaboration beyond traditional trade.

In the defense sector, this shift is visible in joint military exercises, such as the recent Exercise Tarang Shakti in Rajasthan. This cooperation is intended to improve military interoperability and suggests a move toward greater reliance on shared technology platforms. Similarly, the IT and pharmaceutical sectors remain vital links, with India continuing to serve as a major supplier of generic medicines to the US market, reinforcing its position in the American healthcare supply chain.

Despite this diplomatic progress, the business and trade landscape faces clear complexities. Official updates indicate that trade negotiations have reached a plateau. This stagnation stems from disagreements over trade imbalances, tariff structures, and India’s energy import policies. For investors, the most significant monitorable is the recently enacted Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. This legislation grants the US the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue to import energy from Russia.

This legislative development creates a regulatory risk for the broader trade relationship. While sectors like IT and pharma enjoy strong demand, the threat of tariffs introduces potential cost pressures and policy uncertainty. The challenge for policymakers will be to navigate these geopolitical pressures while maintaining the momentum of the broader strategic partnership.

For investors, the immediate future will depend on how India balances its energy security needs with the requirements of its trade partners. The market will be watching for any further policy announcements regarding tariff exemptions or shifts in energy import strategies, as these factors will directly influence the stability and predictability of bilateral trade.
