UK Steel Quotas Complicate Trade Talks
The UK's decision to impose new safeguard measures on steel imports, drastically cutting tariff-free quotas, emerged unexpectedly as Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks neared completion. These measures slash duty-free import volumes by nearly 60% from current levels starting July 1, 2026. They were not included in the trade pact's original draft.
India Warns of Lower Export Gains
Indian officials have expressed concerns that the new quota system could significantly reduce the expected advantages for the nation's steel exporters under the FTA. This move creates substantial uncertainty for Indian businesses preparing to benefit from the agreement, potentially slowing expected growth in market access.
Both Nations Vow to Save Trade Deal
Despite this dispute over steel, both New Delhi and London remain committed to making the wider FTA a reality. Discussions are underway to find a "creative solution" to resolve the steel import issue without jeopardizing the comprehensive agreement. The pact is expected to boost market access for goods and services and encourage cooperation in areas like mobility, technology, investment, and clean energy once it is in effect.
