AI Chatbot and FAQ Tool Support New Tax Law

India's Income Tax Department is introducing the Income Tax Act, 2025, a major update replacing the decades-old 1961 Act. This shift, effective April 1, 2026, presents taxpayers with a significant learning challenge. To help with this transition, the department has launched two key digital tools: Kar Saathi, an AI chatbot, and Kar Setu, a detailed FAQ tool.

How Kar Saathi and Kar Setu Help Taxpayers

Kar Saathi provides round-the-clock support, answering questions about return filing, tax payments, and Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) rules. It is designed to answer common questions that often needed professional advice. Working alongside the chatbot, Kar Setu maps old sections to their new equivalents. This is vital because every section in the Income Tax Act, 2025, has been renumbered. Together, these tools aim to simplify compliance for individuals and businesses.

The Income Tax Act, 2025, was created to reduce complexity and modernize tax administration for the digital age. The Act also includes revised exemption limits for allowances like children's education and meal benefits. The traditional TDS certificate for employees, Form 16, is replaced by a new system-generated Form 130. This new form pulls data directly from department records. This should improve accuracy and reduce mismatches between TDS deposited and employee entitlements.

Broader Digital Tax Initiatives

These tools are part of the department's broader drive for digitalization, which includes initiatives such as faceless assessments and the Annual Information Statement. The department has not specified AI's direct role in assessment processes, but it is committed to using technology to make tax compliance more accessible. Success will be measured during the first full filing period under the new Act, using compliance rates and dispute data as key indicators.
