India Prepares for World Bank’s First B-READY Assessment in 2026

India is currently undergoing its inaugural assessment under the World Bank’s Business Ready (B-READY) framework, with the final report due in November 2026. This new system moves beyond simple policy rankings to evaluate the practical, day-to-day regulatory and operational business environment. For investors, the findings will provide a critical benchmark for assessing the reality of India’s investment climate and regulatory stability.

India is in the process of participating in its first assessment under the World Bank’s new Business Ready (B-READY) framework. This development marks a significant shift in how global institutions measure the investment climate, moving away from the discontinued 'Ease of Doing Business' index. The B-READY assessment is more comprehensive, focusing on 10 specific topics such as business entry, location, utility services, labor, and dispute resolution.

Unlike previous rankings that often focused on legislative changes, the B-READY framework uses a broader methodology based on three pillars: the regulatory framework, public service delivery, and actual operational efficiency. The goal is to measure how businesses function on the ground, rather than just checking if a law exists on paper. For the Indian market, this means the assessment will look at whether government systems effectively support business operations or create bottlenecks.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is the nodal agency coordinating India's efforts for this assessment. The government has been working closely with various ministries and state authorities to reduce compliance burdens, digitize approval processes, and streamline regulatory workflows. These reforms are part of a broader push to make India a more attractive destination for global and domestic capital by creating a predictable and time-bound regulatory environment.

For investors, the most relevant aspect of this assessment is how it handles the gap between central policy and state-level execution. Regulatory fragmentation remains a persistent challenge, as businesses often face different compliance hurdles depending on the state of operation. The B-READY report, expected in November 2026, will likely highlight where these friction points exist. If the data shows success in integrating these workflows, it could strengthen investor confidence in long-term project execution.

While this is a macro-economic event, it influences the operating landscape for all major sectors. Clearer, faster, and more transparent approval processes—measured as part of the assessment—can reduce business costs and operational risks. Investors should monitor the November 2026 report not just as a ranking, but as an indicator of where India has made genuine progress in administrative efficiency and where potential hurdles for corporate growth still remain. The focus for stakeholders will be on how these findings influence future policy shifts aimed at harmonizing regulations across the country.
