Cooling Appliances Lead Home Energy Use
Cooling devices like fans, air conditioners, and coolers are now the single biggest energy users in Indian homes, consuming 40% of residential electricity. This finding comes from a joint report by CLASP and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), based on a survey of 4,321 households across different climate zones.
Escalating National Demand
This trend occurs as India's overall energy needs rapidly increase. The residential sector alone accounts for 25% of the country's total electricity use and is growing annually by 6%. In the last decade, national electricity consumption has nearly doubled, with peak demand rising by 79%.
Urban-Rural Divide and Inefficiency
Average annual home electricity use is 1,805 kilowatt-hours, with urban households using far more than rural ones, especially in hot regions. The survey also found that many appliance models are still energy-inefficient. While ceiling fans and LED lights are common everywhere, air conditioners are in just 13.3% of homes surveyed, rising to 17% in urban areas but only 4% in rural settings.
Future Projections and Policy Recommendations
Cooling demand is set to skyrocket, with projections showing an eightfold increase by 2037-38. Kitchen appliances are the second-largest energy consumers at 28%. To address this, CLASP and BEE are pushing for stricter efficiency standards for major appliances like ACs and refrigerators. They also recommend financial incentives, bulk purchasing programs, and consumer education to encourage the adoption of more energy-saving models.
