Critical FTA Juncture
Union Minister Piyush Goyal arrives in Brussels on January 8-9, 2026, for pivotal high-level discussions aimed at accelerating the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. The visit targets a critical juncture in talks between the EU, India's foremost trading partner and significant investor.
Context and Progress
This engagement builds upon the FTA negotiations that were re-launched in June 2022, having progressed through fourteen rounds of intensive discussions. The most recent ministerial dialogue took place in December 2025, shortly before intensive technical deliberations on January 6-7. During his visit, Goyal is scheduled to meet EU Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič.
Strategic Objectives
The discussions are designed to provide strategic guidance to the negotiating teams, address outstanding issues, and expedite the conclusion of a balanced and ambitious agreement. Key areas expected to be covered include narrowing divergences and clarifying pending matters to facilitate a modern economic partnership.
India's Key Demands
New Delhi is actively advocating for zero-duty market access for its labour-intensive sectors. Prominent among these are textiles, leather, apparel, gems, and jewellery. These industries are vital components of India's export economy and significant sources of employment.
