While the report highlights limited job substitution risks, it underscores massive potential for workforce augmentation, particularly in knowledge-intensive sectors. Artificial intelligence is set to become a key driver for India’s long-term economic efficiency, according to a recent analysis by Goldman Sachs. The report, which outlines the impact of generative AI, projects that the technology will lift India’s annual labor productivity growth by 0.4 percentage points over the next ten years. This shift is expected to play a critical role in sustaining economic momentum, as productivity gains are a primary engine for GDP growth in the long run.

Workforce Dynamics and AI Integration

Contrary to fears of widespread job displacement, the Goldman Sachs study suggests that the Indian workforce will see more augmentation than substitution. The firm estimates that between 8% and 12% of non-agricultural jobs face a direct risk of substitution by AI. However, roughly 45% of jobs are expected to be complemented or augmented, meaning employees can use AI to increase their output or quality of work rather than being replaced. This suggests that the immediate impact on employment may be more about changing how work is done rather than reducing the total headcount across the economy.

Knowledge-intensive sectors, including healthcare, education, media, and professional financial services, are positioned to see the highest level of AI-driven efficiency gains. In these fields, AI tools can help professionals handle repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on more complex, value-added activities. In contrast, sectors heavily reliant on manual labor, such as construction and mining, are identified as having a lower risk of disruption from current generative AI technologies.

Infrastructure and Power: The Investment Angle

For investors, the report highlights a critical secondary effect of AI adoption: the surge in infrastructure demand. The expansion of artificial intelligence capabilities requires robust data centers, which are energy-intensive facilities. The growing need for electricity, cooling systems, and water management in these data centers may create new business opportunities and demand for utilities and infrastructure companies. The pace at which India can expand its power grid and digital infrastructure will be a key determinant of how effectively businesses can integrate AI on a large scale.

Economic Risks and Monitoring

While the productivity outlook is positive, the report also points to potential challenges that could dampen these benefits. Global protectionism is a notable risk; if international restrictions on goods trade extend into services, India’s strong services export model could face pressure. Furthermore, the actual economic benefit will depend heavily on the strategy companies choose. If firms prioritize aggressive automation to reduce payroll costs over using AI to augment staff capacity, the employment landscape could become more volatile.
