GeM Opens Doors to Global Buyers

GeM, India's Government e-Marketplace, has undergone a significant transformation, now welcoming international companies to bid on tenders and allowing payments in multiple currencies. This marks a departure from its previous model, which was exclusively for domestic suppliers and settled solely in Indian rupees.

Boosting Trade Ahead of Free Trade Agreements

This strategic opening aligns with the upcoming implementation of several Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) expected later this year. The goal is to expand market access for global businesses, while domestic suppliers can anticipate increased competition in public procurement processes.

AI Steps Up Fight Against Procurement Fraud

To safeguard the process, GeM is enhancing its fraud detection capabilities with advanced AI and machine learning. These technologies are specifically trained to spot irregularities like bid-rigging, price manipulation, and schemes designed to unfairly limit competition. The platform actively monitors for improper product classifications that could exclude certain bidders.

Thousands of Listings Removed, Cartels Exposed

These integrity efforts have already yielded significant results. GeM has reviewed over 19 lakh product catalogues, leading to the removal of about 91,000 incorrect listings. Furthermore, more than 10,500 cases of suspicious procurement have been flagged, alongside the identification of 764 instances of bid-rigging. Consequently, around 450 sellers have faced suspension.

Guardians Against Unfair Pricing

Sophisticated price governance tools have examined over 11,000 cases of unusually high or low pricing, resulting in the removal of many non-compliant listings. AI systems proactively prevent over 10 lakh incorrect pricing entries during the initial product listing phase. The platform also utilizes real-time analytics and bid scoring to support informed decision-making and deter manipulation.

GeM Surges in Value

These upgrades are supporting GeM's rapid expansion as a key player in India's public procurement landscape. The platform has surpassed a cumulative Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of ₹18.4 lakh crore, with more than ₹5 lakh crore transacted in the current fiscal year alone. This sustained growth underscores GeM's expanding importance to the Indian economy.
