GAIL Plans IPO for City Gas Arm by FY28; Q2 Profit Doubles

GAIL (India) has approved the public listing of its subsidiary, GAIL Gas, aiming to divest 25% stake by FY28. Meanwhile, the state-run utility reported a sharp rise in Q2 FY27 consolidated net profit to ₹4,724 crore, as it managed gas supply challenges with higher volumes.

GAIL (India) has officially approved plans to launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO) for its wholly-owned subsidiary, GAIL Gas. The company intends to sell up to 25% of its stake in the subsidiary as part of a strategy to unlock value in its city gas distribution business. While the board has granted in-principle approval, the final terms and timeline will be determined by investment bankers, with the public debut targeted for the 2028 financial year.

GAIL Gas operates city gas projects across 16 geographical areas and has interests in various joint ventures across states including Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Assam. By listing this business, GAIL is moving to create a more focused entity for its gas distribution activities. This move comes as the city gas distribution sector in India sees increasing competition and scale, as the national gas grid continues to expand to more households and industries.

In terms of financial performance, GAIL (India) posted strong results for the quarter ending September 30, 2026. The consolidated net profit more than doubled to ₹4,724 crore, compared to ₹1,989 crore in the same quarter last year. Revenue also grew significantly, reaching ₹47,474 crore against ₹35,894 crore in the previous year's corresponding quarter. These numbers were driven by higher volumes in both gas transmission and marketing.

Operations remained resilient despite international supply issues. Geopolitical tensions in West Asia have caused ongoing disruptions to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supplies since early 2026. To ensure a steady supply for customers, GAIL has had to rely more on spot market procurement and diversify its sourcing. This operational flexibility has been essential in maintaining volume growth, with transmission volumes reaching 130.10 million standard cubic meters per day and marketing volumes hitting 97.23 million standard cubic meters per day.

Looking ahead, the company continues its heavy investment in infrastructure. Capital spending for the first half of the current fiscal year stood at ₹7,600 crore, with an annual goal of ₹12,900 crore. These investments are aimed at supporting long-term growth and enhancing service delivery. For investors, the next important steps to track will be the progress of the IPO preparation, the valuation of GAIL Gas, and how the company manages global gas price volatility while maintaining its profit margins. The ability to secure stable gas supplies in a tense geopolitical environment remains a key factor for the company’s ongoing operational success.
