Digital Ads Drove ₹49,731 Crore in MSME Economic Output in 2025

A report by Google and the India SME Forum reveals that digital advertising helped India's MSMEs generate ₹49,731 crore in economic output in 2025. This digital shift contributed ₹6,534 crore to GST collections, signaling a positive trend for small businesses. While digital adoption is rising, most MSMEs still face hurdles like budget constraints and a lack of technical skills.

Digital advertising is becoming a key growth engine for India's micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), according to a collaborative report by Google and the India SME Forum, with technical analysis provided by Deloitte. In 2025 alone, digital ad campaigns by these businesses generated an estimated ₹49,731 crore in economic output and ₹32,307 crore in gross value added. This shift has also benefited public revenue, with GST collections linked to digital advertising rising to ₹6,534 crore in 2025, up from ₹5,000 crore the previous year.

Digital Adoption Fuels Business Growth

Data from a survey of 3,249 MSMEs conducted in June 2026 highlights that businesses embracing digital strategies are seeing clear financial benefits. Nearly 60% of these enterprises reported double-digit revenue growth directly tied to their digital efforts. Improved marketing efficiency is a major factor, with 78% of businesses stating that their cost to acquire new customers has dropped, and 43% of those reporting savings of up to 25%. On average, more than half of the surveyed businesses are seeing returns of two to three times their advertising spend, with top performers achieving returns as high as five times.

Expanding Market Access and Future Potential

Digital platforms are enabling MSMEs to look beyond their local markets. Currently, 27% of surveyed businesses are serving multiple cities within their home state, and 21% have successfully expanded their reach across state borders. The report notes that one in three businesses is now receiving international inquiries through online channels, with 10% actively engaging in global trade. This expansion is supported by the growth of vernacular internet usage in India, which now reaches 870 million users, making it easier for businesses to connect with customers in smaller towns.

Challenges in Scaling Digital and AI Adoption

Despite these gains, a significant portion of the sector remains under-digitized, with only 13% of MSMEs currently using digital marketing tools. Many businesses report that they struggle to choose the right technology or lack the internal expertise to implement digital strategies effectively. Artificial intelligence is viewed as the next big opportunity, with potential to boost profitability by 30-35% through better automation and customer targeting. However, adoption remains in the early stages. Major hurdles continue to hold back wider implementation, including a lack of necessary skills, reported by 75% of businesses, budget limitations for 60%, and general organizational readiness. For investors, the long-term growth of the e-commerce market—projected to triple to $250 billion by 2030—will depend on how quickly these MSMEs can overcome these structural barriers to achieve full digital transformation.
