Crude Oil Crosses $100; Nifty Slips to 13-Week Low

Brent crude oil breached the $100 per barrel mark, pushing the Nifty 50 down to a 13-week low of 23,431.50 on September 9, 2026. Foreign investors continued to offload Indian equities as rising energy costs sparked inflation fears. Meanwhile, shares of Coforge fell nearly 9% following the sudden resignation of its Chairman over governance and internal audit concerns.

Indian equity markets faced a challenging session on September 9, 2026, as Brent crude oil prices crossed the $100 per barrel threshold for the first time since July. This surge in energy prices, driven by intensifying geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, has sparked concerns about rising inflation and potential pressure on corporate profit margins. As a result, the Nifty 50 index extended its losing streak to a fourth consecutive session, closing at 23,431.50, its lowest level in 13 weeks.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been net sellers in the Indian market throughout the first week of September. When oil prices rise, India's import bill increases, which can negatively impact the country's trade deficit and weigh on the rupee. Investors often pull capital from emerging markets like India during such volatility, preferring to reduce exposure to assets sensitive to higher energy and raw material costs.

Governance Concerns at Coforge

Specific corporate news added to the negative sentiment, particularly within the IT sector. The Nifty IT index declined by 3.2% during the day. Among the hardest-hit stocks was Coforge, which saw its share price drop nearly 9% after the company announced the immediate resignation of its Chairman, O.P. Bhatt, on September 8. The resignation followed internal audit findings regarding the company's board evaluation process. To address the leadership gap, the company has appointed Vivek Sharma as the interim chairperson, with his term set to run until January 31, 2027. Investors are closely monitoring how the company addresses these governance and audit observations.

Pockets of Growth

Despite the broader market weakness, some sectors continue to show expansion. The electric vehicle (EV) segment reported strong activity, with retail registrations reaching a record 2.98 lakh units in August 2026, marking a 52.9% year-on-year increase. This suggests that consumer demand in the EV space remains resilient despite the volatile macroeconomic environment.

Additionally, there was positive movement in the manufacturing sector. During the UP Textile Conclave 2026, the state of Uttar Pradesh secured new investment proposals totaling Rs 5,196 crore for the textile industry. These commitments are focused on leveraging the PM MITRA Park in Lucknow-Hardoi, aiming to strengthen the region’s position as a major textile manufacturing hub.

Going forward, market participants will be tracking crude oil price stability and any further developments regarding FII outflows. For investors holding IT stocks, the focus will likely remain on whether sector-wide margin pressure eases or if the current downtrend continues. For Coforge specifically, the clarity provided by the board regarding the internal audit findings and future leadership plans will be the next key milestone for shareholders to track.
