Canada Pension Plan Commits C$1 Billion To CtrlS Data Centres

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) has committed C$1 billion to CtrlS Datacenters to expand its digital infrastructure footprint in India. The fund, which now manages a record C$33.7 billion in Indian assets, is pivoting toward long-term growth in data centers while maintaining a cautious outlook on specific AI-driven technology trends.

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) has significantly increased its commitment to the Indian market, reaching a record C$33.7 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2026. This milestone marks a 17-fold growth in the fund's Indian portfolio since it established its Mumbai office in 2015, highlighting the country's role as a major hub for the pension fund's long-term capital deployment.

As part of this expansion, the fund has committed up to C$1 billion (approximately INR 70 billion) to a strategic partnership with CtrlS Datacenters Ltd. This commitment involves two distinct parts: a C$588 million investment for an 8.2% equity stake in the company, and an additional C$441 million allocated to a joint venture dedicated to developing hyperscale data center campuses across India. These facilities are designed to meet the rising demand for digital infrastructure, which the fund views as essential for supporting India’s growing digital economy.

Strategic Focus on Digital Infrastructure

The move into data centers marks a pivot toward infrastructure assets that provide stable, long-term returns. While the fund is capitalizing on the massive demand for digital services, management remains measured regarding the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Despite the global excitement surrounding AI, executives have emphasized a cautious approach, noting that while the demand for data is real, identifying long-term winners in the evolving tech landscape remains speculative. The fund prefers a diversified strategy rather than concentrating capital on specific, unproven technology companies.

Portfolio Diversification and Risk Management

Beyond digital infrastructure, the fund continues to maintain a broad exposure to the Indian economy. Its portfolio includes stakes in major institutions such as the National Stock Exchange of India and Kotak Mahindra Bank, as well as industrial logistics players like IndoSpace. To maintain discipline, the fund has also shown a willingness to exit investments, such as its previous stake in a real estate joint venture with Phoenix Mills and its position in the logistics company Delhivery.

For investors and market participants, the key monitorable remains the execution of these large-scale data center projects. Building high-capacity data centers involves complex operational, regulatory, and development risks, particularly in a market as vast as India. Furthermore, like many global institutional investors, CPP Investments must navigate broader economic pressures, including fluctuating interest rates and shifting geopolitical dynamics that could impact valuations. The fund’s ability to successfully scale its digital infrastructure portfolio while balancing these market risks will be the primary focus for stakeholders in the coming years.
