Asian Markets Rise as Tech Gains Counter US Yield Jitters

Asian markets climbed on Tuesday following a record-breaking session on the Nasdaq, driven by strong demand for AI stocks like Nvidia. While technology shares pushed indices higher, investors remain cautious due to US 10-year Treasury yields hovering at 24-year highs of 5.31%. The Euro also touched a 17-month low, highlighting concerns over global fiscal stability.

Asian equity markets opened with gains on Tuesday, following a strong performance in the United States where the Nasdaq hit a record close. Global investors appear to be focusing on the growth potential of technology and artificial intelligence, even as high US interest rates create a challenging environment for stocks.

The rally is primarily supported by AI-related companies. Nvidia reached a market valuation of $5.76 trillion, underscoring the persistent appetite for computing power and chip technology. This sentiment has helped offset broader concerns about the cost of borrowing and economic growth, with the market-implied probability of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike cooling to roughly 20-24% following recent jobs data.

However, the optimism is being tested by the bond market. US 10-year Treasury yields remain elevated at approximately 5.31%, a level not seen since 2002. High bond yields often act as a hurdle for equity markets because they make debt more expensive for corporations and provide investors with a high-return alternative to stocks. This contrast between the tech-led growth and the pressure from the bond market is currently the defining tension for global asset prices.

Currency markets are also reacting to political and economic strain. The Euro has dropped to a 17-month low against the US dollar, largely driven by worries over fiscal instability in France. As investors move money away from assets viewed as risky, the US dollar has gained strength, acting as a safe haven during periods of political uncertainty in Europe.

For Indian market participants, these global signals are meaningful. While a tech-led recovery in global sentiment can provide short-term support, the persistence of multi-decade high US yields can limit the flow of foreign capital into emerging markets. When US government bonds offer high returns with lower relative risk, it can lead to reduced buying in international equity markets.

Investors may monitor the direction of bond yields and Federal Reserve commentary in the coming days. The next important update will be whether US inflation or jobs data keeps the pressure on yields, or if a cooling economy encourages the central bank to maintain current interest rate levels. Monitoring how European political events impact the global currency markets will also be important, as these factors often influence volatility in broader indices.
