Andhra Pradesh Launches Subsidized Rice Scheme to Cut Inflation

The Andhra Pradesh government has started selling BPT rice at reduced rates to tackle rising food costs. Residents can buy up to 10 kg of steam rice at ₹52/kg and raw rice at ₹50/kg via Rythu Bazaars. This intervention aims to lower retail prices for households and stabilize the local market.

The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a subsidized rice distribution program to provide relief to consumers facing higher retail food prices. Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar confirmed that the state, working alongside the Andhra Pradesh Rice Millers Association, has launched this initiative to increase supply and manage market rates for essential grain varieties.

Impact on Consumer Prices

The initiative targets two popular rice varieties that have seen price increases in retail stores. BPT steam rice, which recently traded between ₹64 and ₹65 per kilogram, is now available through government-backed outlets at ₹52 per kilogram. Similarly, BPT raw rice is being sold at ₹50 per kilogram, a reduction from the prevailing market range of ₹58 to ₹60 per kilogram. To ensure fair access and prevent bulk hoarding, the government has set a purchase limit of 10 kilograms per household.

Access and Distribution

To facilitate widespread availability, the state has activated a distribution network comprising 150 Rythu Bazaars and 500 rice mill outlets. These locations act as direct sales points, bypassing traditional retail intermediaries to pass the price benefit directly to the end consumer. Sales under this program commenced on August 1, 2026.

Broader Economic Context

This move by the Andhra Pradesh government reflects a wider effort to combat food inflation, which has remained a concern for policymakers due to price volatility in essential commodities. Minister Manohar indicated that the administration is also tracking price trends for other staples like tur dal and palm oil. For investors and market participants, this intervention is significant as it demonstrates how state-level administrative actions can influence retail pricing dynamics. The government's ability to maintain these subsidies while managing the supply chain through private associations will be important to observe. Ongoing monitoring of retail inflation data and the sustainability of these price interventions will be the next key updates for those tracking the state's economic stability.
