ASSOCHAM Business Confidence Index Up 8% in September

The ASSOCHAM Business Confidence Index grew 8% year-on-year in September 2026, reaching 128.25. While sentiment remains positive, growth moderated slightly from August as global energy prices and currency fluctuations persist. This index, which tracks indicators like GST and auto sales, serves as a high-frequency monitor for investors to gauge the health of the domestic industrial sector.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) reported an 8 percent year-on-year rise in its Business Confidence (ABC) Index for September 2026, with the index reaching 128.25. This rise reflects a consistent recovery trend for domestic industry, especially when viewed against the performance from earlier in the year.

In May and June 2026, growth rates in business confidence were as low as 2.3 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively. The current 8 percent growth indicates that the industry has gained significant momentum throughout the third quarter. For the first half of the current fiscal year, average business confidence has risen by 5.6 percent year-on-year, suggesting that the industrial environment has strengthened despite initial volatility.

The ABC Index, which uses April 2023 as its base of 100, is calculated using approximately two dozen economic indicators. These include high-frequency data such as GST collections, passenger vehicle sales, and manufacturing output. For investors, these metrics act as a practical barometer for real-world economic activity, offering a detailed look at where consumer demand and industrial production stand before official quarterly financial results are released.

Despite the positive trend, the latest data shows a slight moderation in growth compared to the 8.8 percent recorded in August. This slowdown is being attributed to persistent global economic pressures that continue to influence the domestic corporate environment. Instability in West Asia, fluctuating global energy prices, and the ongoing depreciation of the Indian rupee are creating a complex landscape for local companies. While overall sentiment remains positive, these external factors often lead to higher input costs and pressure on profit margins, which investors monitor as potential risks to earnings stability.

To provide more timely insights, the industry body is transitioning to a more frequent reporting schedule. ASSOCHAM will publish monthly updates for the remainder of 2026 and plans to switch to a fortnightly release starting in January 2027. Investors can track these frequent updates as early indicators of shifts in industrial demand, credit growth, and inflationary pressures, helping them anticipate trends before official government data is finalized.
