Bitcoin Hits $87,000 Amid Strong Institutional ETF Buying

Bitcoin has reached an eight-month high above $87,000, driven by heavy buying in US spot ETFs and a short squeeze. While global sentiment improves, Indian investors should note the tax implications and high volatility risks associated with digital assets.

Bitcoin has climbed to an eight-month high, trading above the $87,000 mark as of September 22, 2026. This price movement was largely fueled by sustained interest in US spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which have seen consistent daily inflows, and a sudden market event known as a short squeeze. A short squeeze occurs when the price of an asset rises quickly, forcing traders who had bet against it—by opening short positions—to buy the asset to close their trades, which adds even more buying pressure and pushes the price up further.

The global crypto market capitalization has now reached approximately $2.92 trillion, reflecting improved risk appetite among investors. Supporting this trend are broader economic signals, such as easing oil prices and a reduction in US 10-year Treasury yields, which generally make riskier assets more attractive to institutional investors.

For investors in India, this global momentum brings important context. While Bitcoin is gaining attention internationally, the local regulatory and tax landscape remains distinct. Crypto income in India is subject to a 30% tax rate, and a 1% tax deducted at source (TDS) applies to transactions, which can significantly affect the actual returns for retail investors. Additionally, the government has clarified that crypto assets are not legal tender, meaning they lack the protections associated with regulated financial products like stocks or mutual funds.

Investors must also remain cautious of the inherent volatility in the digital asset market. Rapid price spikes are often followed by sharp corrections, and while institutional demand provides a new layer of market participation, it does not remove the speculative nature of the asset. The market will likely watch the $90,000 psychological level in the coming sessions to see if the current bullish trend can be sustained or if profit-booking begins to emerge.
