Orkla India Limited, the parent of packaged foods maker MTR Foods, debuted on the stock exchanges on November 6 with a muted listing. Shares opened slightly above the ₹730 IPO price, at ₹751.50 on BSE and ₹750.10 on NSE, a modest 3% premium compared to 9% in the unlisted market.
The ₹1,667.54-crore Initial Public Offering (IPO) was structured as an Offer for Sale (OFS), meaning existing shareholders sold their stakes, and the company did not raise new capital. The IPO was highly oversubscribed, reaching 48.73 times. Proceeds are going to Orkla ASA and its subsidiaries.
Orkla India holds a strong position in branded foods, with spices contributing about 66% of revenue. Recent revenue growth is around 5% CAGR (FY23-FY25) due to market conditions, while historical growth for MTR Foods was higher. Q1 FY26 saw 8.5% volume growth. Margin improvements stem from lower raw material costs and operational efficiencies. The company has substantial unused factory capacity, allowing expansion without immediate capital needs. Management confirmed no fresh capital infusion is required, given strong annual cash flow and no debt.
**Impact**: The subdued listing may affect short-term investor sentiment. However, the company's solid market presence, consistent cash generation, and debt-free status, coupled with expansion potential, present long-term value. The OFS structure is crucial for investors to understand, as no funds are directed to business operations. The P/E of 39x suggests high growth expectations. **Impact Rating**: 7/10
