Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies are actively adopting technology to bring innovative purchasing solutions to rural Indian markets, driven by a digitally fluent population and rapid tech adoption. Srinivas Kolluru, Business Head at Ghodawat Retail Pvt Ltd, highlighted that harnessing AI and smart retail technology is revolutionizing the shopping experience and supporting local economies.
A Deloitte-FICCI report projects India's retail industry to reach over USD 1.93 trillion by 2030. Furthermore, an EY report suggests that Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can boost retail productivity by 35-37% within five years, transforming insights-driven pricing, promotions, and customer experiences.
In line with this trend, Star Localmart, the largest rural-first supermarket chain and the retail arm of the Sanjay Ghodawat Group, has announced an ambitious plan to deploy 20,000 vending machines across its store network and high-traffic locations within the next three years. This initiative aims to transform how rural consumers access everyday necessities by eliminating barriers of time and location, offering a seamless, self-service shopping experience.
Impact: This development signifies a significant push towards modernizing retail infrastructure in rural India, enhancing consumer access to goods and improving operational efficiency for companies. The increased adoption of technology in retail can lead to better sales, customer engagement, and market penetration, potentially benefiting the FMCG and retail sectors. Rating: 7/10
