Wow! Momo Enters Sri Lanka via Softlogic, Eyes Global Scale

Wow! Momo Foods plans to open 20 outlets in Sri Lanka by 2028 through a franchise deal with Softlogic Corporation. This move is part of a larger plan to enter markets like the UAE and the US, using its existing international FMCG distribution network to support the restaurant rollout.

Wow! Momo Foods, the Indian quick-service restaurant (QSR) operator, has finalized a master franchise agreement with Sri Lanka’s Softlogic Corporation to launch its brand in the island nation. The company aims to establish 20 outlets within the next two years, with the first locations scheduled to open by late 2026.

This entry into Sri Lanka is a key step in the company’s broader international growth strategy. Beyond the Sri Lankan market, the company is preparing to enter the United Arab Emirates, with immediate focus on Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. The management team is using these initial international ventures to test its operational models, menu, and supply chain logistics before moving toward a potential launch in the United States, which is a longer-term goal.

Leveraging Existing FMCG Footprint

The company is using its established FMCG business as a bridge for this expansion. Wow! FMCG already has a presence in 14 countries, with its products available across more than 1,000 retail touchpoints. This existing network provides the company with valuable data regarding consumer preferences in international markets like Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Canada. By combining its experience in consumer goods with its QSR business, the company aims to build a more diverse revenue stream beyond its Indian base.

Market Challenges and Risks

Expanding an restaurant brand into new countries involves risks that are different from domestic growth. The success of the Sri Lanka and UAE rollout will depend heavily on the company's ability to navigate local competition and maintain consistent food quality. Maintaining a cold chain—the system used to keep food frozen during transport—is critical for a momo-based business, and logistical hurdles in new regions could increase costs. Additionally, the company will face stiff competition in the UAE and the US from both well-entrenched global fast-food chains and local food operators who already understand the market.

Working with Softlogic Corporation, which is a diversified conglomerate listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange, allows Wow! Momo to benefit from the partner's local market knowledge. This franchise-led approach is often used by restaurant chains to scale without the need for large direct capital spending in foreign countries. The company's future performance will depend on its ability to effectively scale this model while ensuring that its brand remains consistent across different cultures and consumer preferences. Observers and stakeholders will likely track the actual opening of the first Sri Lankan stores and any further progress on its Middle Eastern roadmap to gauge the company's ability to execute its international vision.
