Wipro Consumer Care Launches 'Snuggles' Dog Food at ₹530/kg

Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting has entered the Indian pet food market with its new premium dog food brand, Snuggles. Priced at ₹530 per kg, the company is targeting a segment currently dominated by established players. Investors should note that Wipro Consumer Care is a private company, separate from the publicly listed IT firm, Wipro Limited.

Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting has officially entered the Indian pet food market with the launch of its dog food brand, Snuggles. The product line is priced at ₹530 per kg and is being introduced with an initial focus on the Hyderabad market, where pet ownership penetration is relatively high.

It is essential for investors to understand that Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting is a private entity. The consumer goods business was demerged from Wipro Limited in 2013. Therefore, this market entry by the private FMCG company has no direct impact on the financial performance or stock price of the publicly traded IT company, Wipro Limited, which trades on the BSE and NSE.

The pet food market in India is estimated to be worth over ₹5,500 crore. As the industry experiences rapid growth, several large FMCG conglomerates are looking to increase their presence in this space. By positioning Snuggles in the premium category, Wipro Consumer Care is entering a competitive landscape that includes global giants like Mars and Royal Canin, as well as new domestic offerings from companies like Reliance Consumer Products and Godrej Consumer Products.

This launch follows Wipro Consumer Care’s earlier strategic investment in the D2C (Direct-to-Consumer) pet-care startup, Goofy Tails, which provided the company with initial insights into the category. The new brand uses human-grade ingredients and freeze-dried chicken, which aligns with a broader industry trend toward healthier, higher-quality pet nutrition.

However, the company faces distinct challenges as it attempts to scale. One primary hurdle is consumer behavior, as many pet owners in India continue to rely on home-cooked food rather than packaged alternatives. Additionally, the company is currently dependent on imported ingredients to maintain its quality standards. Overcoming supply chain volatility and managing the cost of these imports will be important as the company aims to move from this initial launch to a national footprint. Success in this category will depend on the firm's ability to compete with established brands that have built strong distribution networks and brand loyalty over many years.
