V-Mart Q2 Loss Widens to Rs 16.34 Cr; New Merchandising Lead Appointed

V-Mart Retail reported a wider net loss of Rs 16.34 crore for the second quarter, despite an 18.1% revenue growth to Rs 952.99 crore. Rising operational expenses, which surged 22%, have put pressure on profitability. The company also appointed Varin Agarwal as Head of Merchandising and approved the reclassification of two promoters to the public category.

V-Mart Retail, a prominent player in the value apparel segment, released its financial results for the quarter ending September 30, 2026. The company reported a net loss of Rs 16.34 crore, wider than the Rs 8.87 crore loss in the same quarter last year. While the company successfully grew its top line with revenue from operations rising 18.1% to Rs 952.99 crore, the bottom line remained impacted by a sharper 22% jump in total expenses, which reached Rs 976.37 crore.

Strategic Focus on Merchandising

To address the current operational challenges, the company has appointed Varin Agarwal as the new Head of Merchandising, effective November 3, 2026. This role is crucial for a value retailer, as it involves managing product mix, pricing, and stock levels to drive sales and protect margins. Agarwal, who previously led the streamlining of the firm’s LimeRoad business, will be tasked with improving the efficiency of the company's product assortment. Investors will likely look for signs that this leadership change helps the company better manage costs and optimize its inventory.

Financial and Operational Context

Although the company faced a net loss, EBITDA—a measure of operating profit before interest and taxes—stood at Rs 86.06 crore, reflecting growth compared to the previous year. This suggests that the core business continues to generate cash, but high operational costs are eating into the final profit. For a company operating in the value retail space, maintaining control over fixed costs like store rent and employee expenses is essential, especially as it expands its footprint in tier-2 and tier-3 markets.

Promoter Reclassification

In addition to operational updates, the board of directors has approved the reclassification of Raghav Agarwal and Ditya Agarwal from the promoter category to the public category. This process follows the disclosure that both individuals hold zero shares in the company. The transition, which is standard for corporate governance, remains subject to final regulatory approvals from the stock exchanges under SEBI guidelines. This move does not change the operational ownership but clarifies the promoter group structure for shareholders.

Monitorables for Investors

Going forward, the key factor for investors will be whether the company can bring its expense growth in line with revenue expansion. The value retail sector is sensitive to rural income levels, as a large portion of the company’s customer base resides in smaller towns. Any slowdown in rural demand or an increase in raw material costs could further challenge profit margins. The market will also track how the new merchandising strategies translate into better inventory turnover and reduced operational drag in the coming quarters.
