United Breweries Q2 Profit Rises 190% as Premium Sales Grow

United Breweries posted a 190% jump in quarterly profit to ₹135 crore, driven by a 16% rise in sales volume and strong demand for premium brands. While the company improved its profit margins, it faces ongoing cost pressures from global supply chain disruptions and remains dependent on state-level policy reforms.

United Breweries reported a significant turnaround in its financial performance for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. The company recorded a profit after tax of ₹135 crore, a 190% increase compared to the previous year. Net sales also grew by 24% to reach ₹2,536 crore, supported by a 16% increase in overall sales volume.

The Premiumization Strategy

A major driver of this growth has been the company’s focus on selling more premium products. Sales of premium beer brands surged by 38% during the quarter. Specifically, Heineken Silver has emerged as a key growth engine, registering a 67% increase in sales. This trend toward higher-value products is a strategic shift for the company, as premium segments generally offer better profit margins. To support this growth, the company is investing in localized production, including a new manufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh, which is expected to begin operations in September of next year. This is part of a broader plan to reduce logistics costs by bringing production closer to consumer markets.

Margin Recovery and Cost Pressures

Despite the strong top-line numbers, the company has been navigating challenging conditions. Operational costs have been under pressure due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which caused supply chain disruptions. The company reported a direct financial impact of ₹300 to ₹350 crore due to these issues. However, the company managed to expand its EBITDA margin by 480 basis points to 11.9%. This improvement was achieved through disciplined revenue management, price adjustments in specific states, and increased use of recycled returnable bottles, which improved packaging efficiency and reduced costs compared to previous inter-state logistics models.

State Policy and Investor Monitorables

The beer industry in India is deeply influenced by state-level policies, which can dictate pricing, distribution, and taxes. The company’s financial success remains tied to the regulatory environments in key markets like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Management has highlighted that while some states have implemented beneficial reforms, others still require more equitable pricing frameworks. A significant concern for investors is the issue of delayed payments from some state authorities, which affects the company's cash flow and ability to reinvest in the business. Moving forward, shareholders should monitor the company’s progress in navigating these state-specific policies and how it executes its plan to expand cold chain infrastructure in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to maintain its market leadership.
