Trent Q2 Profit Rises 9% to ₹490 Crore as Zudio Hits 1,000 Stores

Trent reported a net profit of ₹490 crore for the second quarter, up 9% year-on-year, while revenue grew 23% to ₹5,788 crore. The company reached a milestone of 1,000 Zudio stores, driving overall expansion. Investors are focusing on how the retailer balances rapid store growth and heavy capital spending against competitive pressure in the fast-fashion and grocery segments.

Trent, the Tata group retail firm, reported a net profit of ₹490 crore for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, marking a 9% increase from the ₹451 crore recorded in the same period last year. Revenue for the quarter stood at ₹5,788 crore, reflecting a 23% growth compared to the previous year. This performance comes as the company continues to aggressively expand its physical footprint across the country.

A key highlight of the quarter was Trent reaching the 1,000-store milestone for its value-fashion brand, Zudio. The company now manages a combined network of over 1,300 outlets across formats including Westside, Zudio, and its Star grocery chain. The expansion strategy aims to capture wider market share, particularly in the value-fashion segment, where competition from both organized retail and unorganized players remains intense.

Beyond apparel, Trent’s diversification into beauty, footwear, and innerwear has become a significant contributor, now accounting for more than 21% of total revenue. Meanwhile, the Star grocery business showed 20% growth, with the company continuing its strategy of focusing on private-label products to potentially improve profit margins. This pivot toward in-house brands is a common strategy in the retail sector to reduce dependency on third-party supply chains and better control product pricing.

From an investor perspective, Trent has historically traded at a higher valuation than many traditional retail peers. This premium often reflects market expectations for continued rapid growth and successful execution of its fast-fashion model. However, such high valuations mean investors often scrutinize the company’s ability to maintain profit margins while spending heavily on new store openings and supply chain infrastructure. Any slowdown in consumer demand, especially in the discretionary spending category, could impact the payback period for these new stores.

Competition in the fast-fashion space has also increased, with several large retail groups and newer digital-first brands entering the segment. While Trent has maintained strong growth, sustaining this pace will depend on its ability to keep store-level profitability high as it moves into smaller cities and new locations. Additionally, the retail sector faces ongoing challenges from inflationary pressures, which can influence how much consumers are willing to spend on fashion and lifestyle products.

Looking ahead, market participants will likely monitor the pace of new store openings, the performance of the Star grocery format as it matures, and whether the company can maintain its current operating margins amidst high expansion spending. Management has indicated a focus on optimizing capital efficiency, which remains a key area for shareholders to track in upcoming quarters.
