Tata Starbucks Targets Rapid Store Expansion In India

Tata Starbucks plans to open 50 to 100 new stores annually as the joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks reports revenue growth. The company is focusing on premium offerings to capture rising demand in the Indian coffee market while navigating competition from emerging local and international chains.

Tata Starbucks, the joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks, is accelerating its expansion strategy in India. The company recently launched its sixth 'Reserve' store in Hyderabad, marking its first such location in South India. This move signals a push toward higher-value products and premium consumer experiences as the coffee chain looks to strengthen its footprint in the country.

Financial Performance and Market Growth

Following a period of consolidation, the joint venture has shown consistent recovery. For the financial year 2024, the company reported revenue of ₹1,367 crore, representing a 7% increase. While the business posted a net loss of ₹98.95 crore, the gap has been narrowing. Management noted that stores have been cash-positive for the past two to three years, and the company has achieved operating profitability, which is a key indicator of its operational maturity.

During the June quarter, same-store sales experienced growth in the mid-single digits. The broader coffee category in India is currently seeing annual growth of approximately 20%, with market penetration reaching the 20-25% range. Executives remain optimistic about the long-term potential of the Indian market, with projections suggesting a capacity for up to 8,000 stores over the coming years.

Strategy Amid Rising Competition

The Indian coffee segment has seen an influx of new players, including international brands like Tim Hortons and domestic startups such as Blue Tokai and Third Wave Coffee. Instead of viewing these entrants solely as rivals, management believes this competition is accelerating the overall growth of the coffee category. By focusing on menu innovation—including the introduction of protein-based, matcha, and zero-sugar beverages—the company aims to align with evolving wellness trends while maintaining brand identity.

Future Monitorables for Investors

Investors may keep track of the company's ability to maintain these growth rates while managing the costs associated with an aggressive store rollout of 50 to 100 new locations annually. The long-term profitability of the venture will depend on balancing these expansion costs with customer demand and the ability to maintain pricing power in a crowded market. Continued focus on operational efficiency and the success of new product categories will be important indicators for the company's financial health in future quarterly updates.
