Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is considering a foray into India's growing low-alcohol beverage sector, mirroring its successful Campa launch. The conglomerate aims to target young consumers with ready-to-drink options, challenging rivals like Varun Beverages in this expanding market. This strategic move follows RIL's consolidation in the non-alcoholic beverage space.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is reportedly exploring an entry into India's burgeoning low-alcohol beverage market, a strategic pivot to replicate the success of its popular Campa soft drink brand. The conglomerate aims to capture a significant share in a segment poised for substantial growth, directly challenging established players such as Varun Beverages.

Targeting Young Consumers

RIL is evaluating the launch of ready-to-drink "soft" or low-alcohol beverages. These products are specifically designed to appeal to younger demographics, a key growth driver in the beverage industry. An RIL official indicated the company is keen to participate in a category anticipated to become a major trend, underscoring the strategic importance of this potential expansion. Low-alcohol beverages encompass a range of products including flavored malt drinks, hard seltzers, and low-ABV cocktails, all characterized by lower alcohol content than traditional spirits or beers.

Navigating Regulations

The company's strategy will involve focusing exclusively on states where alcohol sales are legally permitted, as regulations are governed by individual state governments. RIL anticipates that minimal need for a separate distribution network across most markets could enhance operational efficiencies, as reported by Informist.

Expanding Beverage Portfolio

This potential venture into low-alcohol drinks follows Reliance Consumer Products Ltd's aggressive expansion in the non-alcoholic beverage sector. Since 2022, RIL has bolstered its portfolio through acquisitions and partnerships, including brands like Campa Cola, Sosyo, and Raskik. The Campa brand, in particular, has achieved notable success, recording gross sales exceeding ₹4,700 crore in FY26 and establishing itself as India's fourth-largest carbonated soft drink brand.

Brand Separation Strategy

Sources suggest that the low-alcohol range is unlikely to be branded under Campa to maintain a clear distinction between alcoholic and non-alcoholic products. Reliance may also consider acquiring an existing alcohol manufacturing firm to facilitate its entry into the segment.
