Pernod Ricard Profit Falls 26% on US, China Slump; India Growth Shines

Pernod Ricard reported a 26% annual profit drop to 1.2 billion euros as sales in the US and China declined. However, the spirits giant saw 7% organic sales growth in India, fueled by rising demand for premium alcohol. Investors are now monitoring how the company manages currency risks and trade tariffs in the coming fiscal year.

Pernod Ricard, the owner of brands like Absolut vodka and Beefeater gin, posted a 26% decline in annual net profit to 1.2 billion euros for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026. Total revenue reached 9.4 billion euros, marking a 14.2% decline on a reported basis. This performance highlights the challenges the global spirits industry is facing, driven by weak consumer demand and shifting trade dynamics in major economies.

US and China Drag Down Performance

The company’s financial results were heavily impacted by significant weakness in its two largest markets. Sales in the US dropped by 14%, largely due to a cooling economic environment and inventory corrections, where distributors reduced stock levels to match slower retail demand. In China, the situation was more difficult, with sales falling by 19%. This decline was driven by weak consumer confidence and specific trade pressures, including new Chinese anti-dumping duties on imported cognac, which negatively affected the Martell brand.

India Remains a Strategic Growth Pillar

In contrast to the broader global weakness, India emerged as a key growth driver for the company, recording 7% organic sales growth. This performance is largely attributed to a strong shift among Indian consumers toward higher-value, premium spirits. The company’s strategy in the region has been successful, with the Royal Stag brand maintaining its status as the world’s largest-selling whisky brand by volume. This regional strength provides a vital offset to the difficulties seen in the US and China, demonstrating the importance of geographic diversification for the group's revenue stream.

Outlook and Investor Monitorables

Looking ahead, management expects broadly stable organic net sales for fiscal 2027. However, the company has adjusted its medium-term growth guidance to the lower end of its 3% to 6% range, reflecting ongoing global uncertainty.

Investors should continue to track how the company manages several key risks. These include persistent currency volatility involving the US dollar, the Turkish lira, and the Indian rupee, which can impact the value of overseas earnings. Additionally, geopolitical trade tensions, such as those affecting cognac exports to China, remain a potential pressure point for profit margins. The ability to maintain profitability amid these rising costs and changing regulatory environments will be a critical factor for the company in the coming quarters.
