Orkla India Targets National Expansion; Q1 Profit Up 11%

Orkla India, the parent of MTR and Eastern, is pushing for national expansion and digital growth to drive revenue. While the company reported an 11.1% rise in quarterly net profit, it is facing margin pressure due to rising commodity costs. Investors are watching how the firm balances this growth strategy against intense market competition and inflationary trends.

Orkla India, the company behind food brands like MTR and Eastern, is setting its sights on national expansion as it enters a new phase of growth. Since its stock market listing in November 2025, the company has focused on moving beyond its traditional stronghold in South India to capture a larger share of the nationwide branded food market.

In the first quarter of the 2027 financial year, the company’s financial performance showed a mix of steady revenue growth and cost challenges. Orkla India reported a revenue of ₹659 crore, a 10.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Net profit for the quarter rose by 11.1% to ₹87.7 crore.

While the company is achieving revenue gains, profit margins have faced pressure. The EBITDA margin, which measures operational profitability, contracted to 17.05% from 18.73% a year earlier. This decline is largely attributed to high inflation in spice commodities, specifically chilli and coriander, which are essential raw materials for the company’s product portfolio.

To drive future growth, Orkla India is heavily investing in digital channels. Its digital commerce operations grew by 38.1% in the recent quarter, now contributing nearly 9% to total domestic revenue. The company has launched an internal initiative, ‘Project Bold,’ to enhance its digital capabilities, improve technology adoption, and develop products specifically designed for online retail. This strategy aims to cater to the growing demand for convenience foods, such as ready-to-cook breakfast mixes, which the company believes have high potential for national penetration due to increasing urbanization.

The branded food sector in India remains highly competitive. For investors, the most important monitorable in the coming quarters will be whether the company can successfully scale its brands nationally without compromising on profitability. The management's ability to navigate commodity price volatility and defend its margins against intense competition will be a key area of focus for market observers.
