Nestle India Stock Falls as Rising Costs Temper Profit Growth

Nestle India shares declined on the NSE after the company reported a 36.3% profit jump to ₹1,026.7 crore for Q2 FY2027. Despite a 20.5% revenue rise to ₹6,782.17 crore, investors sold the stock due to concerns over a 17% increase in operating expenses. The market reaction highlights the challenge FMCG companies face in protecting profit margins amid rising raw material costs.

Nestle India shares witnessed a sharp correction on the National Stock Exchange following its September quarter earnings announcement. Despite the company reporting a 36.3% year-on-year rise in net profit, investors sold the stock, driving it down by as much as 9% during intraday trade. The stock later recovered slightly but remained under pressure, trading 4% lower by afternoon as the market digested the impact of rising operating costs on the company's overall financial health.

For the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, the FMCG giant posted a net profit of ₹1,026.7 crore, compared to ₹753.2 crore in the same period last year. Revenue from operations increased by 20.5% to ₹6,782.17 crore, supported by steady volume growth and the company's continued focus on moving toward higher-value products. Exports also contributed positively, with a 22% growth in that segment adding ₹267.3 crore to the total revenue.

However, the strong revenue growth was overshadowed by rising expenditure. Total operating costs increased by 17% to ₹5,405.51 crore during the quarter. This expenditure is largely tied to high raw material prices, a challenge that is currently affecting many companies in the packaged food and FMCG sector. When costs rise significantly, companies must decide whether to absorb the impact, potentially hurting profit margins, or pass the costs to consumers through price increases, which can sometimes slow down demand. While Nestle India's EBITDA climbed 31% to ₹1,615.48 crore, the stock's negative reaction suggests that the market is concerned about the sustainability of these margins.

Sector Pressure on Profitability

The FMCG sector is currently dealing with a challenging environment where price sensitivity is high among consumers. While established brands often maintain steady demand, the company's ability to navigate volatile raw material costs without hurting sales volume is a critical factor for investors. High inflation in essential commodities forces companies to find a balance between protecting their profitability and keeping products affordable to maintain market share. If raw material costs remain high, protecting profit margins will continue to be a primary challenge for management.

Investors will now look to upcoming quarters to see how the company manages these cost pressures. The key monitorables for the stock will be whether input prices show signs of stabilization and if the company can maintain its volume growth despite potential price hikes. Any indicators of a slowdown in demand or further pressure on margins due to sustained high expenses could be the next important trigger for the stock price.
