Myntra Reports 30% Order Surge Driven by Gen Z Spending

Myntra has seen a 30% rise in order volumes, with Gen Z now making up half its customer base. The platform is benefiting from a shift toward premium and D2C brands, helping to push up average order values. While the company reports strong growth in Tier 2 cities, the broader e-commerce sector remains highly competitive, with rivals like Ajio and Amazon vying for market share.

Myntra, the fashion e-commerce platform owned by Flipkart, has reported a 30% increase in order volumes this year. The company stated that Gen Z consumers now represent 50% of its total customer base. This change suggests that younger shoppers are treating fashion as a priority expense, a behavioral shift that has helped the platform maintain growth despite broader inflationary pressures impacting household spending.

Financial data from the platform shows a clear trend toward premiumization. Average order values increased by 10% to 12% during the recent festive period, while year-to-date figures indicate a steady 7% to 8% growth. This uptick is supported by a significant change in the product mix, with a move toward premium labels and Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) brands. While these categories previously made up a small portion of the marketplace, their share has grown into the double digits. Consumers are showing a higher appetite for specialized items such as ethnic wear, jewelry, and premium footwear rather than generic mass-market products.

Operational expansion is central to this growth. The company’s 'M Now' service, which provides rapid delivery, has gained market share in its active cities. Myntra is currently testing a model that integrates physical retail stores into its 'M Now' infrastructure, aiming to achieve delivery windows of 60 to 90 minutes. This strategy relies on partnerships with major brands such as Bestseller and Max to create a more integrated supply chain. The data also reveals that demand for international labels is growing faster in Tier 2 cities than in major metropolitan centers, showing that aspirational spending patterns are spreading across the country.

For investors monitoring the Flipkart and Walmart ecosystem, the Indian fashion e-commerce market remains intensely competitive. Other major players, including Reliance Retail’s Ajio, Amazon Fashion, and Tata Cliq, continue to compete aggressively for market share. While Myntra is seeing strong volume growth, the key monitorable for the business will be its path to long-term profitability. Rapid delivery models and heavy marketing to capture Gen Z customers involve high operational costs that typically pressure margins. Investors will be watching to see if the shift toward premium products can offset these expenses and whether this consumer demand proves sustainable if economic conditions tighten.
