Kansai Nerolac Q1 Profit Rises 5% to ₹231.5 Crore

Kansai Nerolac Paints reported a 4.9% increase in June quarter net profit to ₹231.5 crore, supported by steady demand in decorative and industrial segments. To capture future automotive demand, the company approved a ₹601 crore capacity expansion plan to be completed by FY29. Investors should monitor how the company manages raw material costs and currency fluctuations as it funds these projects through internal cash flows.

Kansai Nerolac Paints delivered a stable performance for the first quarter of the fiscal year, reporting a consolidated net profit of ₹231.5 crore, a 4.9% increase compared to the same period last year. The company’s revenue from operations grew by 9.8% to ₹2,374 crore. Operating performance remained steady, with EBITDA reaching ₹328.3 crore, representing a 14% margin, even as the company navigated a challenging environment regarding input costs.

Demand Drivers and Operational Context

Management highlighted that demand remained resilient across both decorative and industrial segments. The automotive coatings business was a standout performer, outpacing general market trends due to specific strategic efforts. Performance coatings also contributed to the topline growth. A delayed monsoon season reportedly provided an unexpected lift to sales during the quarter. Looking ahead, the company is counting on a later Diwali festival date to help drive sales during the upcoming festive season.

Challenges in Raw Material Costs

While demand is stable, the company is facing margin pressure from external factors. Geopolitical tensions in West Asia have disrupted supply chains, causing a rise in raw material prices since March. Additionally, the weakness of the rupee against the US dollar has increased the cost of imported raw materials. To protect its margins, the company has begun implementing price hikes across its product range. Investors may want to track whether these price increases are accepted by the market without hurting demand volumes in the coming quarters.

Expansion and Capital Allocation

The company board has approved a major capital spending project totaling ₹601 crore, aimed at expanding manufacturing capacity across its plants in Sayakha, Bawal, and Hosur. The expansion focuses on increasing output for industrial paints, powder coatings, and resins. Specifically, the Sayakha plant will see an addition of 1,750 kilolitres per month in industrial paint capacity, while new capacity for powder coatings and resins will also be added to improve backward integration.

These projects are scheduled to be completed in phases by FY29. The company intends to fund these expansions entirely through internal cash accruals. While using internal cash avoids the burden of new debt, shareholders should watch for any impact on liquidity or dividend payouts as the company commits this capital over the next few years. The success of this strategy will depend on the company's ability to match this new capacity with sustained demand growth in the automotive sector and the effectiveness of its cost-control measures amidst global price volatility.
