Kansai Nerolac Plans ₹600 Crore Expansion for Auto Coatings

Kansai Nerolac Paints has announced a ₹600 crore capital spending plan focused on automotive powder coatings and resin manufacturing. The company aims to complete this over 2.5 years to strengthen its industrial paint business. Investors may watch how this investment impacts cash flow and future return ratios alongside steady demand in the automotive sector.

Kansai Nerolac Paints has outlined a significant capital spending plan worth ₹600 crore, primarily targeted at boosting its automotive powder coatings division. This initiative includes a strategic move toward backward integration by setting up internal resin manufacturing capabilities. The company intends to deploy this capital over the next two to two-and-a-half years. This is in addition to the firm’s standard annual capital expenditure, which typically ranges between ₹150 crore and ₹200 crore.

Strategic Shift and Financial Targets

Management has stated that this expansion is designed to improve operational efficiency and secure a stronger foothold in the high-demand automotive paint segment. The company is targeting a Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) between 15% and 18% from these new projects. For investors, the primary monitorable will be the company’s ability to execute these projects on schedule and within the planned budget. Efficient execution is crucial as larger spending phases often put temporary pressure on cash flow until the new capacity becomes fully functional.

Sector Context and Performance Expectations

The paint industry in India is currently influenced by raw material price trends and competitive activity in both decorative and industrial segments. Kansai Nerolac remains a key player in the industrial and automotive paint space. Brokerage estimates, such as those recently published by Prabhudas Lilladher, reflect expectations of a volume growth rate of approximately 7.3% between FY26 and FY28. These projections are supported by the company’s internal guidance of maintaining operating profit margins in the range of 13% to 14%.

Understanding Investor Risks

While the company has a clear plan for growth, shareholders should be aware of standard industry risks. Fluctuations in crude oil prices can affect the cost of raw materials, which may pressure profit margins if the company is unable to pass on costs to customers. Additionally, the automotive sector is cyclical; any slowdown in vehicle demand could impact how much of the new manufacturing capacity is actually utilized. Historical data shows that in capital-intensive sectors, the timing of capacity commissioning relative to market demand is a significant factor in determining the actual return on investment. The next key updates to track will be the progress of the resin manufacturing facility and any quarterly commentary regarding margin stability amidst fluctuating input costs.
