Kalyan Jewellers Q1 Profit Up 32%, Stock Slips 2.7%

Kalyan Jewellers reported a 32% rise in Q1 profit to ₹349 crore with revenue of ₹10,589 crore on August 4, 2026. Despite the strong top-line growth, the stock price fell 2.73% as investors reacted to operating margins compressing to 6% from 7.2%. The results highlight an aggressive expansion strategy coupled with shifts in product sales mix.

Kalyan Jewellers India Ltd. announced its financial results for the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year on August 4, 2026, reporting a 32% increase in consolidated net profit to ₹349 crore. Revenue from operations also saw a significant surge, climbing nearly 46% year-on-year to reach ₹10,589 crore. While the top-line numbers show strong consumer demand, the company's shares closed 2.73% lower at ₹591.40, reflecting market concerns over profitability metrics.

Understanding the Margin Compression

Although the company achieved record revenue, investors focused on the decline in operating profitability. The EBITDA margin, which measures core operational efficiency, narrowed to 6% from 7.2% in the same quarter last year. According to the company's performance review, this pressure was primarily due to higher operating costs, increased spending on promotional initiatives, and a shift in the sales mix.

Specifically, the company saw a higher contribution from recycled gold—which accounted for 46% of sales—and a decline in the share of higher-margin studded jewellery. These factors combined to create a scenario where revenue growth did not translate directly into higher operating margins. For shareholders, the key monitorable remains whether the company can normalize these margins in coming quarters despite competitive pressures.

Operational Expansion and Digital Growth

On the operational front, the company continues its aggressive growth strategy. During the June quarter, Kalyan Jewellers added 12 new showrooms across India to expand its physical footprint. Furthermore, its digital platform, Candere, showed strong momentum with revenue growth of 112%. This multi-channel approach is intended to capture a wider share of the organized jewellery market, which is currently undergoing significant changes due to regulatory shifts and evolving consumer preferences.

Risks and Future Outlook

Investors are keeping a close watch on several factors that could influence future performance. Gold price volatility remains a significant risk for jewellery retailers, as sudden price swings can impact gross margins and consumer buying patterns. Additionally, the reliance on recycled gold, while a tool to manage inventory costs, can weigh on overall profitability metrics if the demand for high-value studded jewellery does not pick up.

Moving forward, the primary areas for investors to track include the company's ability to balance its showroom expansion costs with improvements in operating margins. Management’s strategy to navigate intense competition and sustain revenue growth, while also managing the sales mix between bullion-heavy gold and higher-margin jewellery segments, will be critical updates in the upcoming quarterly disclosures.
