Shares of India Gate maker KRBL climbed 13% after the company reported a 51% increase in second-quarter profit to Rs 259 crore. Strong domestic sales drove the growth, though investors are keeping an eye on a 31% drop in exports and potential regulatory risks facing the basmati sector.
Shares of KRBL Ltd, the producer behind the India Gate basmati rice brand, rose 13% during Tuesday’s trading session as the market reacted to the company’s second-quarter results for the 2027 fiscal year. The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 259 crore, a 51% increase compared to the Rs 172 crore recorded in the same period last year. Revenue from operations also moved up, reaching Rs 1,727 crore, representing a 14.3% year-on-year growth.
The results showcased a clear divergence between domestic and international performance. Domestic revenue surged 33% to reach record levels, providing a strong foundation for the company’s growth. This domestic demand played a crucial role in offsetting weaknesses in other parts of the business. The company also improved its operational efficiency, with operating profit margins increasing to 19.2% from 15.1% in the corresponding quarter last year.
While the domestic segment was a bright spot, the international business faced significant pressure. Export revenue contracted by 31% during the quarter. This decline was primarily driven by lower shipment volumes to key markets in the Middle East, highlighting the volatility inherent in the company’s export-oriented business model. For investors, this international weakness serves as a reminder of the risks associated with global trade in agricultural commodities.
Beyond current results, the basmati rice industry is often subject to changing government regulations, including potential shifts in minimum export prices or changes to export duty structures. These regulatory factors can create sudden impacts on both volumes and profit margins. Additionally, the company operates in a competitive consumer staple sector where managing raw material costs and maintaining pricing power are constant challenges.
For the first half of the 2027 fiscal year, KRBL reported a total net profit of Rs 520 crore and revenue of Rs 3,223 crore. As the company moves into the second half of the year, investors will likely track whether domestic growth momentum can be sustained and if the company can navigate potential regulatory hurdles in the export market. Management's commentary on future demand and cost management will be the next key monitorable for shareholders.
