Nationwide Inspections Surge

Authorities nationwide conducted 397,009 inspections of food businesses in FY 2025-26, marking a significant increase in oversight. This heightened activity aims to ensure better compliance and uphold public health standards across the country.

Failed Samples Trigger Fines and Legal Action

Testing intensified with 165,747 food samples analyzed by the third quarter. A notable 17.16% failed compliance checks, leading to immediate regulatory action. This included resolving 23,580 adjudication cases and securing 1,756 criminal convictions to hold businesses accountable.

₹154 Crore in Fines, 945 Products Recalled

Businesses faced substantial financial consequences, with ₹154.87 crore levied in penalties to deter violations. To protect consumers, 945 food products were recalled, preventing unsafe items from reaching markets and reducing health risks nationwide.

States Lead Enforcement Efforts

State governments are spearheading the enforcement drive. Commissioners of Food Safety direct state operations, oversee district work, and approve prosecutions. At the local level, Designated Officers manage licensing and coordinate inspections, supported by Food Safety Officers who conduct checks and collect samples. Additional District Magistrates serve as Adjudicating Officers for civil violations, issuing penalties and corrective orders.

Street Vendors, Licensing Streamlined

A significant effort brought over 1 million street food vendors under formal oversight, aiming to boost hygiene. Licensing rules were simplified: businesses with less than ₹1.5 crore in turnover need basic registration, those between ₹1.5 crore and ₹50 crore require state licenses, and larger firms over ₹50 crore need central licenses. This system balances business operations with necessary regulation.

Enhanced Testing and Legal Framework

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) expanded its testing network by notifying 18 laboratories, including advanced sites. This boosts accuracy and speed in identifying contaminants. The enforcement system is supported by a judicial structure, with Magistrate Courts handling minor offenses and Special Courts addressing serious violations. Overall, the year's performance shows a stronger regulatory system, with states playing a vital role in ensuring accountability and protecting consumers.
