Global Recognition for Indian Spirits
The prestigious blind tasting, conducted by TheBestFifty.com in New York, stripped away all preconceived notions of origin and brand reputation. Jurors evaluated whiskies solely on taste and quality, using sealed bottles and a rigorous five-point scoring system. This methodology ensures that only the liquid itself dictates the outcome, making the Gold medals awarded to Amrut Distilleries and Radico Khaitan particularly significant.
Winning Expressions
Bengaluru-based Amrut Distilleries, a pioneer in the Indian single malt scene, secured two Gold medals. Amrut Indian Single Malt Whisky Cask Strength impressed with its complex balance of peat, spice, and maritime notes, attributed to select Indian barley and Himalayan water. Its sibling, Amrut Indian Single Malt Whisky, was lauded for its layered tropical fruit profile and rich, peaty finish.
Radico Khaitan's Rampur brand also celebrated success from Uttar Pradesh, earning Gold for both Rampur Barrel Blush and Rampur Asava. Barrel Blush, finished in Australian shiraz casks after maturation in American bourbon barrels, offered honeyed sweetness and spice. Asava, unique for its finish in Indian Cabernet Sauvignon wine casks, delivered a profile reminiscent of classic Islay whiskies with a distinct Indian character, a testament to innovative cask management.
Industry Validation
Abhishek Khaitan, Managing Director at Radico Khaitan, stated the win validates the global journey of Rampur, reinforcing the belief that "Indian single malts today stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's finest." Sanjeev Banga, President – International Business, added that blind tastings are crucial for objective judgment, underlining the growing international appetite for Indian single malts. This recognition is expected to bolster export opportunities and enhance the global credibility of the Indian spirits industry.
