Indian Festive Spending Shifts to Value and Financing

Indian consumers are shifting toward value-focused purchases this festive season, prioritizing smaller pack sizes and gold exchange schemes over high-volume buying. While overall spending remains steady, the structural change is forcing businesses to rely on aggressive financing and tactical pricing to sustain margins. Investors should monitor how companies balance these strategies against persistent inflation.

The Indian festive season is witnessing a major change in how households manage their budgets. Rather than reducing spending, consumers are being more selective, shifting focus from total volume to better value. This trend is visible across sectors, from jewellery to consumer goods, and reflects a broader effort to manage costs without sacrificing the spirit of the festive season.

Gold Jewellery and the Exchange Model

High gold prices are the primary driver behind this change. With gold trading near historic highs, families are increasingly using old-gold exchange schemes to fund new purchases instead of paying cash for the full amount. At many major retailers, these exchange transactions now make up a significant portion of total sales. For jewellery companies, this means revenue remains stable, but the amount of physical gold sold per customer may be lower. Investors should track how this impacts profit margins, as processing old gold involves different logistics and costs compared to selling fresh inventory.

FMCG and the Strategy of Smaller Packs

In the food and gifting space, the move is toward granular consumption. Instead of buying larger quantities of commodities, consumers are choosing standardized, well-packaged gift boxes. Brands are actively catering to this by offering smaller, modular pack sizes that allow them to maintain price points that are acceptable to budget-conscious buyers. While this strategy helps maintain sales volumes, it places pressure on companies to ensure their packaging and supply chain costs do not erode profitability. This is a common tactic to keep products affordable without having to raise the final price too drastically.

Financing as a Consumption Driver

Big-ticket purchases, such as home appliances and electronics, are being sustained primarily by aggressive financing options. Retailers and manufacturers are working closely with banks and non-banking financial companies to offer easy EMI schemes. By reducing the upfront cost burden, companies are keeping demand alive despite inflationary pressures. For investors, the reliance on credit-led growth is a critical factor to watch. While it keeps sales moving, the sustainability of this demand depends heavily on the consumer's ability to continue paying their EMIs long after the festive season ends.

The critical test for retail and consumer-facing businesses will be their performance over the upcoming wedding season, which typically follows the festive period. Investors should watch upcoming quarterly results for signs of margin pressure and whether companies are successfully managing input costs without losing market share to competitors who might be pricing products more aggressively.
