IKEA to Open New 80,000 Sq Ft City Store in Bengaluru

IKEA is launching an 80,000-square-foot urban store in Bengaluru next month, marking a strategic shift toward smaller, city-center locations. This expansion by the Swedish furniture retailer intensifies competition in India’s organized furniture market, forcing domestic retailers to face increasing pressure as global chains prioritize accessibility over traditional large-format warehouse models.

IKEA is set to expand its Bengaluru footprint with a new 80,000-square-foot city-center store opening next month. This launch follows the retailer’s established presence in the city, which includes a 4.6-lakh-square-foot large-format facility in Nagasandra that opened in June 2022. The new store aims to offer a curated selection of over 5,200 products, specifically designed to capture the urban market where customers often prioritize convenience over the time-consuming experience of visiting massive, peripheral warehouse stores.

This move highlights a broader strategic pivot in the company’s Indian operations. Rather than relying solely on the expansive, warehouse-style outlets that defined its initial entry into the country, the retailer is increasingly focusing on compact, high-density urban formats. This model, which is already operational in hubs like Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune, allows the company to reach more customers without the need for large tracts of land on the city outskirts, which are harder to acquire and develop.

While IKEA operates as a private company in India and is not listed on stock exchanges, its expansion carries significant implications for the domestic organized furniture and home decor sector. The growth of global players in India’s urban centers creates a more competitive landscape for listed Indian retailers like Nilkamal and other furniture manufacturers and distributors. As organized retail penetration grows in India, domestic players are increasingly pressured to refine their supply chains and improve their retail footprint to maintain market share against these global entrants.

To support this physical expansion, the company has also been strengthening its backend infrastructure, including distribution centers located in Pune and Gurgaon. These facilities support both the new city-center stores and the retailer's e-commerce operations, which began in Bengaluru in 2021. By integrating digital and physical channels, the company is attempting to capture a larger share of the home decor market, which has seen a steady rise in organized competition.

For investors monitoring the retail and home improvement sectors, the key monitorable will be how quickly these smaller store formats can achieve profitability and whether they can successfully drive higher footfalls compared to the traditional large-format stores. Additionally, the ability of domestic competitors to differentiate their offerings and maintain margins in the face of aggressive expansion by global brands will remain an important trend to track over the coming quarters.
