Digital First Entry into Tamil Nadu
Swedish home furnishings leader IKEA has officially commenced online deliveries across Tamil Nadu, extending its reach to customers in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Salem. This strategic digital-first move, effective January 22, allows consumers to access over 6,400 home furnishing products and solutions through the IKEA app, ikea.in, or its Shop-by-Phone service.
Physical Store Ambitions Remain Unclear
While the online delivery network is now active, IKEA has remained non-committal regarding the timeline and specifics of establishing a physical store in Chennai. However, the company acknowledged the city's significant market potential, noting that approximately 25,000 Chennai residents are already members of the IKEA Family program. The company stated its long-term commitment to India, viewing it as one of its most promising global markets due to its economic development and demographics.
Omnichannel Strategy and Sustainability Focus
IKEA India's Country E-commerce Integration Manager, Bhavana Jaiswal, highlighted that the current digital sales contribution in India (around 30%) exceeds IKEA's global average. This informs their 'digital first, followed by a store opening' approach, enabling them to gather market intelligence before physical store launches. The retailer is also committed to sustainability, powering its last-mile deliveries in Tamil Nadu with electric vehicles. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader strategy of locating stores near public transportation hubs, with site selection in Chennai currently underway.
Expansion and Sourcing Goals
Patrik Antoni, CEO of IKEA India, expressed IKEA's long-standing interest in the Chennai market since 2015, appreciating the region's blend of tradition and modernity. He further noted that IKEA aims to increase its current 30% local sourcing in India. The company's expansion blueprint includes a mix of large and small physical stores, e-commerce, and other channels, emphasizing an omnichannel experience tailored for the Indian consumer.
Current Indian Footprint
Prior to this expansion, IKEA operated three large-format stores in Hyderabad, Navi Mumbai, and Bengaluru; two city stores in Worli and New Delhi; and one Plan and Order Point in Bengaluru. Deliveries were already available in Maharashtra, AP-Telangana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi-NCR, and select other cities, with Tamil Nadu now representing the newest addition to its service map.
