Flipkart Plans ONDC Food Delivery Launch In Bengaluru

Flipkart is preparing to roll out a food delivery service in Bengaluru by mid-August 2026, utilizing the ONDC network. The model aims to compete with established platforms by offering lower commission rates of approximately 10%. This move follows the company's previous entry into the gourmet grocery segment, established in 2025, as part of its ongoing expansion in quick commerce.

Flipkart is set to expand its service offerings with a new food delivery model in Bengaluru, which is expected to go live around August 15, 2026. This initiative leverages the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) framework, allowing the e-commerce major to integrate directly with the existing digital infrastructure. A key differentiator for this entry is the company's approach to pricing; while traditional food delivery platforms in India typically charge restaurant commissions ranging from 16% to 30%, Flipkart’s model aims to charge approximately 10%.

This move is part of the company's broader strategic focus on growing its presence in the quick commerce and hyperlocal delivery ecosystem. The firm has previously established its footprint in the grocery space through its 'Flipkart Minutes' platform, which launched a dedicated gourmet category in August 2025. That earlier expansion was designed to capture higher-value consumer demand by offering a curated selection of artisanal goods, specialty foods, and imported products, helping the platform diversify beyond daily staples.

The food delivery sector in India is currently highly concentrated, with established players like Zomato and Swiggy holding significant market share. Entering this space presents substantial operational and financial challenges, including high cash burn rates and the requirement for a robust logistics network to maintain timely delivery and service quality. Expanding into such categories necessitates significant capital allocation toward supply chain and infrastructure development.

From an investor perspective, the viability of this new business model will depend heavily on two main factors: user adoption of the service and the ability to attract a sufficient number of restaurant partners to the ONDC network at the lower commission rates proposed. The competitive intensity in this sector remains high, and any move to capture market share will likely require sustained investment in promotional offers and operational efficiency.

It is important to note that Flipkart is a subsidiary of the US-based retail giant Walmart Inc. and is not a publicly listed entity on the Indian stock exchanges. Therefore, there is no direct impact on the Indian equity markets or share price movement from these operational updates. The company’s long-term focus remains on scaling its grocery and delivery operations while navigating a challenging, high-competition landscape. The next important monitorable will be the scale and reception of the Bengaluru launch, specifically how the lower commission structure impacts partner onboarding and service consistency.
