The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has withdrawn its directive against United Spirits Ltd regarding the labeling and flavoring of its McDowell's No. 1 Celebration Matured XXX Rum. The company, which challenged the order in the Bombay High Court, has agreed to reformulate products to comply with regulatory guidelines. United Spirits confirmed there is no material financial or operational impact.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially revoked its earlier order targeting a specific flavored spirit manufactured at United Spirits Ltd’s (USL) Baramati facility. The regulator’s decision to withdraw the directive, which was formally received by the company on August 18, 2026, marks the resolution of a regulatory dispute involving the company’s McDowell's No. 1 Celebration Matured XXX Rum.
The dispute originally centered on allegations regarding the use of flavoring substances that reportedly mimicked a product’s natural profile, leading to concerns about compliance with labeling norms. To resolve the matter, United Spirits engaged with the regulator and agreed to reformulate certain rum and whisky products to ensure full alignment with FSSAI’s food safety and labeling framework.
United Spirits had initially contested the FSSAI’s June 2026 notice by filing a writ petition in the Bombay High Court on August 1, 2026. The company maintained that its product labeling adhered to existing legal standards and industry practices. Following legal challenges and subsequent discussions with the food authority, the regulator issued the revocation order on August 17, 2026.
Regarding the company's financial and operational health, United Spirits has clarified that this regulatory development will not have a material impact. The company continues its manufacturing operations at the Baramati unit while implementing the necessary changes to meet the updated compliance requirements.
This regulatory development follows broader scrutiny across the alcoholic beverage industry. Earlier, the FSSAI had issued notices to other manufacturers, including Associated Alcohols and Breweries Ltd and INBREW Beverages, citing similar concerns regarding flavoring substances. In early August 2026, the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court stayed the regulator’s order against Associated Alcohols and Breweries Ltd, highlighting that the scrutiny was not isolated to a single company.
Investors may monitor the progress of product reformulation across the company’s broader portfolio, as ensuring compliance across various manufacturing facilities remains an important operational step. The focus for shareholders will remain on the company's long-term product strategy and any further regulatory guidelines that may emerge for the spirits sector.
