Colgate-Palmolive Shares Slip 2% as Market Weighs Growth Plan

Colgate-Palmolive (India) shares fell by 2% on Wednesday, extending a decline that began after the company announced its new strategy to ramp up advertising spending. While revenue grew 12% in the latest quarter, investors are debating if higher marketing costs will hurt profit margins in the short term.

Shares of Colgate-Palmolive (India) declined 2% on Wednesday to Rs 1,864.80, continuing a downward trend that began earlier in the week. This selling pressure follows the company’s recent Investor Day, where management presented a new roadmap focused on aggressive investment in advertising and brand building to drive long-term volume growth.

The market is currently weighing the cost of this expansion. While the company aims to strengthen its market position, investors are concerned that a significant 34% hike in advertising and promotion expenses may put pressure on profit margins in the near term. This has led to a cautious sentiment, as market participants balance the need for growth against the potential for reduced profitability.

Financial performance remains relatively steady. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, the company reported a 12% year-on-year revenue growth, reaching Rs 1,591 crore, with net profit rising 11% compared to the same period last year. The company also maintained a strong gross margin of 69.7%. Despite these stable figures, the market is focused on the trade-off between current profitability and future market share.

Expert opinion on the stock remains divided. Some brokerages, including Motilal Oswal and Nuvama, maintain 'Buy' ratings, citing the company's consistent category leadership and long-term brand strength. Conversely, firms like Goldman Sachs and Citi remain more cautious, choosing to wait and see if these higher marketing investments can actually deliver sustained volume growth without hurting the bottom line.

Beyond internal strategy, the company continues to navigate broader sector challenges. Investors are keeping an eye on macroeconomic factors such as commodity price volatility and the pace of rural demand recovery, which is critical for the oral care segment. The key monitorable for shareholders will be upcoming quarterly results to see if the increased advertising spending translates into higher sales volumes, or if margins will continue to face pressure from these higher costs.
